March 10, 2011

Gregory of Nazianzus, the most eloquent of the Cappadocian three, was known for, among other things, his poetry. Here is one example, drawn from his epigram for his friend Basil of Caesarea:

“His speech was like thunder because his life was like lightning.”

Good advice for any preacher.

– Carmina 2.2.119.40 (Patrologia Graeca 38.74); quoted in Jaroslav Pelikan, Christian Doctrine and Modern Culture (since 1700), p.55
